In our house, the kitchen table doubles as homework central. Whether your child closes his homework quietly in a common area or in his bedroom, it is important that you create a special room for this important activity.
What makes a great homework space?
Ample room – books, notebooks and supplies take much space. Make sure each child has enough space to comfortably complete their activities. Kitchen tables are great subjects for this reason. Smaller bedroomTables can not have enough space for all necessary materials.
Quiet – This is just so important. In the past I've tried to watch the evening news (on a small kitchen, TV) while I made dinner and my kids competed their homework. I was always amazed when answering questions in relation to the news that I was barely audible. It really was a distraction for them. Homework is much more effective now that it quietly.
Supplies – Each of my children has a "homeworkBox ", one of those plastic pencil boxes, you probably bought for back-to-school. They each have their own supply of pens, pencils, crayons, and I know what kept her room and brought to the kitchen table for homework time. Extra paper, ruler, a stapler and pencil sharpener are stored in a closet near the kitchen table. No more searching for supplies!
Lighting – poor lighting in the study area can be your child's homework more difficult than it needs tobe. The chandelier over the kitchen table can (not enough light for reading and writing I do not), certainly. Usually task lighting is necessary for the implementation of tasks, the visual concentration. Task lighting provides focused light in addition to the ambient light from an overhead chandelier made available. In our house you have a desk lamp on the kitchen table eye strain.
Let the children select select – Let your children, special pens, storage boxes and folders forHomework time. We have a special Star Wars Pencils only have time for homework. These little things make a big difference to the children.
There is simply no substitute for parental involvement in homework activities for children. When parents treat homework as an important daily activities, the children will treat them as such.
What are your favorite tips homework time? I would love to hear from you!
